Cubmaster/Assistant Cubmaster
Thank you for volunteering with Cub Scout Pack 216 at The Garage! Whether you’ve been involved in Scouting before or not, we wanted to give you some information on your role as Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster with our pack!
Your role as Cubmaster/Assistant Cubmaster
Your primary role as Cubmaster is to plan and help carry out the Cub Scout program in the pack. This includes leading the monthly pack meeting, with the help of other leaders. Our pack has regular committee meetings, which you should attend, where we plan upcoming den meetings, outings, and other activities. As Cubmaster, you play a key role in defining the direction of our Cub Scouting program. Your main responsibilities are:
Work directly with the den leaders and pack committee to make sure all dens are functioning well.
Plan the den and pack programs with the help of other leaders.
Lead the monthly pack meeting with the help of others. Involve all dens in some way.
Coordinate the total Cub Scout program in the pack.
About the Garage
The Garage In Gilman is a community center established in 2015. We have programs for youth and senior citizens, funded entirely by donations. We also hold community events (blood drives, organization meetings, etc.) and serve as the chartered organization for Cub Scout Pack 216. As a volunteer for Cub Scouts, you are considered a Garage volunteer - we will have you fill out a volunteer application so we can do reference/background checks. Once approved, you will receive a copy of our policies and procedures for review. The Cub Scout pack is part of the Garage, so the Garage policies are important to understand!
Training
Training is essential for effective Cub Scout leadership. The BSA offers online course, some of which are mandatory, while the council provides some in person options for additional training.
Youth Protection Training (YPT) is required by the BSA before you are allowed to register as an adult leader. You cannot begin your role as Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster until this training has been successfully completed! To begin this training, you will need to set up a My.Scouting account and enroll here:
After completing YPT, you should complete the online Cubmaster training series, also offered in scouting.org - learn more here.
For in person training, the Cubmaster and any Assistant Cubmasters should complete BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation). This 1-1/2 day course is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. BALOO training is offered by the Prairielands Council and takes place at Camp Drake. It consists of an online prerequisite component in addition to an overnight hands on practical. BSA’s Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the discovery of the necessary tools to help units carry out a successful camping experience. At least one BALOO trained leader is required to attend every overnight Cub Scout event!
Details for BALOO training can be found here.
For additional training options offered by the Prairielands Council, information can be found here.
Once again, THANK YOU for volunteering your time and energy to help Cub Scouts!
